2008/09 In Review

At the start of the 2008/09 KIJHL hockey season the expectations placed on the Sicamous Eagles to compete for a league championship were at best a longshot. With no less than 15 new faces in the line-up, the Eagles certainly couldn't be faulted for feeling somewhat unsure of what awaited them as the regular season began to unfold.

With the league's youngest roster, averaging just under 18 years of age, The Sicamous Eagles would need to rely on a few returning veterans and familiar faces to provide leadership and and experience if they were to fly high in the standings of the tough Okanagan-Shuswap Division. Josh CollinsTwo of those veteran players were captains Aaron Buat and Josh Collins who would be counted on for leadership, scoring and toughness.

Buat, a slick skating centerman looked to continue his scoring touch in the KIJHL after netting 18 goals as a rookie for the Eagles last season. On the backend, the team would have returning two-time all-star Josh Collins to anchor a solid core of defensemen that included Dylan Smith, Ivan Hartling and rookie Bobby Turnbull.

Through September and October of the KIJHL schedule, the Eagles would find themsleves in a four-team battle with the Princeton Posse, Chase Chiefs and the Kamloops Storm. Scoring goals was never a problem as rookies Jarryd Ten Vaanholt, Derek Huisman, Jordan Hynes and Luke Richardson Buat would provide the Eagles with one of the most lethal line-combinations in the KIJHL.

Between the pipes, the Eagles would place the burden of netminding on rookie goaltender, Chris Kingdon to carry them. However, it would be an injury to Kingdon that would be their achilles heal as the Eagles struggled through a disastrous November winning just four of eleven games. It wasn't until the Eagles pounded the Spokane Chiefs 12-2 on December 5th that the boys turned it around and did so in convincing fashion.

The high flying Eagles would not lose again in regulation time until January 31st after ripping off a league best 14-0-3 record. During this same stretch the Eagles would outscore opponents by a margin of 83-38. Lead by high scoring defenseman Dylan Smith, the Eagles defense core would lead the Okanagan-Shuswap Division in points by defensemen with only Creston Valley, Nelson and Spokane registering more.
